Painter Paints With Video

American Landscape – A film by Charles Stuart

Short - It’s a painting, an American Landscape -

Long - Idealised landscape painting in the tradition of Pousin, Claude and Rothko.
USAAF recognition insignia pulsate in a series of ‘states’ united.
It’s an animation, I guess.

It started out as ‘Monument’ - two canvases painted in 1985 when there was still no monument to the American dead from the Vietnam war. ‘The Yellow Rose of Texas’ was painted in 1977 and addresses the theme of cultural imperialism.

In 1994/ 5 more canvases were painted in the series. This has continued and has now been developed as video/ film.

Chaos DVD available. Charles Stuart's film CHAOS with Music by Erik Satie : Piano : Branka Parlic

Parlic's virtuosity is incredible ... Her fingers move hypnotically to Glass' intricate, repetitive motifs.

Painist Branka Parlic is one of the most prominent interpreters of contemporary classical music in the world. A professor and long-time chief advocate of minimalist and avant garde music in Serbia, Branka regularly performs on solo piano and has, to date released three albums.

Branka graduated from the Belgrade University of Musical Arts in the late 1970s and studies under Professor Olga Mihailoviæ. She later honed her craft at the Summer Music Academy in Nice under Professor Pierre Sancan of the Paris Conservatory. While studying, she also co founded the well-known Ensemble for Different New Music.

Fairground art

Fairground art

Every year Ginny and I go down to the Goose Fair to walk around and soak up the atmosphere, smell the air, see the spectacle. Its a rough, noisy, angry, smelly thing.
It stimulates and excites but it doesn’t satisfy.

I have photographed it many times and tried, and failed, to paint it with traditional materials. Knowing that digital video and computer editing programmes were becoming available at affordable prices, I felt that video would be the way to capture the chaotic experience, to reveal the underlying beauty of the modern fairground.

Painting with light.

Chaos is, of course, not what we have here.
The title is convenient but ironic.
What we are presented with is the opposite of chaos - symmetry.
Where the fairground is brash - a cacophony of visual and aural noise, -
Here we have a nocturne -
Symmetry, music, light and movement together, grace, order, beauty.

Just as the Impressionist painters...
