Figures In A Souk is a series of figure paintings based in an imaginary souk. I usually paint all several at once so as not to waste paint and not to get too fussy about any one canvas. Paint fast, move on, come back, sit and observe, go again... maybe, maybe not.
About the paintings.. Like a bird on a wire... I have tried in my way to be free. My work is imagined rather than observed. It is expressive and colourful. I create new images that speak with the past but are not recreations. It is painting rather than "Art" that interests me. it's all about the painting process, applying colour, using texture, making marks. the intereting surface. The painting develops over time. They may seem finished at one point but then later are reworked. The work you see may have been several other paintings during it's lifetime. My enduring influences are many but include mostly Turner, Rembrandt and Rothko.
